The primary focus of the proposed Project is to investigate and analyze spatiotemporal patterns and processes of gradual and rapid environmental change at large spatial scales. Although there are some investigations and formal analysis dealing with explicit ecological data in rapid changing environments, existing compilations of these data and analysis focus on small spatial scales (single sites or populations), usually ignore any spatial structure in the data, and emphasize stability and temporal synchrony over directional change. We propose to bring together ecologists and statisticians well versed in spatiotemporal data, analysis, and modeling to apply existing statistical methods of concordance to describe and test for change in spatial datasets, and extend these methods to account for spatiotemporal processes fully and explicitly. Our proposed working group (USA and Chile) will take full advantage of technical expertise in data wrangling and code management, and the broad and integrative perspectives of Ph.D. students, fellows, and scientists, which are related to the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María from the Chilean party.
